About ‘Learn to Sail’

Drummoyne Sailing Academy is an Australian Sailing Accredited Discover Sailing Centre and offers many of the Australian Sailing Pathways courses for dinghies and powerboats. Launched in March 2015, DSA is a part of the Drummoyne Sailing Club and runs its courses from the club’s facilities on the Parramatta River and surrounds. We have some of the best facilities in the area and safe, enclosed waters, ideal for sailing activities from beginner to keen racing sailor.

The Academy’s aim is to provide opportunities for the community to enjoy sailing – we offer learn to sail, better sailing and powerboat courses in a fleet of safe, modern sailing dinghies with skilled and enthusiastic Australian Sailing accredited Instructors and Coaches.

Open to sailors (aged 8-14) with little or no previous sailing experience. This class offers instruction in basic skills, enabling a student to feel confident sailing a single-handed dinghy. Concepts include: capsize recovery, sail trim, boat terminology, points of sail, upwind sailing, tacking, gybing and safety, with an overall emphasis on FUN and becoming comfortable on the water.

The course runs on both Saturday and Sunday mornings between 9am and noon. The eight-week course is run both in Spring (Oct-Dec) and Summer (Jan-Mar). All sailing and safety equipment is supplied, including use of the academy’s PJ, Sabot and RS sailing dinghies.

This course combines the Australian Sailing – Start Sailing 1 and Start Sailing 2 pathways courses. After completing this course, you may wish to continue to develop skills and experience with the Better Sailing course or progress to the Learn to Race program with the DSC Juniors club.
